ROAR Summer Camp & WCCS Sports Clinics

Director

Director: Jeff VeStrand

Assistant Director

Assistant Director: Ben Neiconi
I am a junior at Winthrop, majoring in Sport Management. I enjoy sports, playing guitar, and eating chocolate. I have been helping at ROAR for as long as I can remember, from refereeing to coaching to camp counseling to assembly coordinator and many other things. Fun fact: I have met NBA basketball legend Allen Iverson... in Rock Hill!

Lead Counselor & CIT Coordinator

Lead Counselor & CIT Coordinator: Rachel Mengas
Hello! I will be the Lead Female Counselor and assist as the CIT Coordinator this summer! This will be my third summer working at ROAR. Over these past 2 summers, I’ve loved learning the best games and dances, seeing my coworkers get pied in the face, and seeing campers come to Christ! I love to study God's Word and teach others.  I cannot wait to see what the Lord does in each camper and staff member’s life this summer!

Basketball Coach

Coach Ed Addie
Learn the basics of basketball from Westminster Catawba Christian School Head Varsity Coach, Ed Addie. Coach Addie has coached youth and high school basketball for well over twenty years and has seen over 100 of his former players recruited to play at the NCAA DI (collegiate) level. A few even made it to the NBA. Prior to Coach Addie taking over the reigns of the Westminster Catawba basketball program in 2019, the varsity team had not had a winning record in the previous 6 years. In his first year WCCS went 20-5. This season (with the number of games played limited to Covid) WCCS is 15-2, achieved a #1 state ranking (Maxpreps)
in NCISAA, Class 2A, and advanced to the NCISAA State play-off quarterfinals. Students of all ages at WCCS love Coach Addie, who encourages the student-athletes who play for him to always bring their Christian faith into the game.

Ninja Warrior Coach

Coach Emily Anderson
Emily is a Physical Education teacher at Cherry Park Elementary School.  She has been a PE teacher for 13 years (6 in middle school and 7 in elementary school).  Mrs. Anderson is an advocate for physical activity and healthy lifestyle.  She loves to run, be outdoors and play different sports/activities with her family (husband, dog and nine year old son).  In her teaching career, Mrs. Anderson is always trying to challenge herself and her students through teaching new and innovative activities in her PE curriculum.  One of her highlights is teaching and training students to become ninja warriors.  Ninja warriors are athletes who overcome obstacles, problem solve and practice healthy behaviors.  During ninja camp, campers will focus on skills to help develop meaningful movement.  They will also participate in course development.  Overall, campers will have fun, be active and challenge themselves.

Soccer Coach

Coach Jake Tassy
Making an appearance at Camp will be Jake Tassy. Coach Tassy is the WCCS School Chaplain and Head Boys Varsity Soccer Coach. Coach Tassy played collegiately at Messiah College and 3 years of professional soccer with the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer League. Both Coach McKeown and Coach Tassy love using soccer as a platform to share the gospel.

Soccer Coach

Coach Ian McKeown
Learn the fundamentals of soccer from Westminster Catawba’s own Ian McKeown and Jake Tassy. Coach McKeown played soccer in high school and one year at the University of South Carolina before a knee injury forced him to hang up his cleats. He currently teaches PE at Westminster Catawba Christian School, and serves as our Girls Soccer Varsity Assistant Coach.

Art Coach

Coach Rebecca Dillon
Rebecca just finished up her sophomore year at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA. She is studying art, specifically graphic design, with minors in business and art history. She has been doing art for as long as she can remember, and she has a passion for sharing the beauty of art with others. She loves kids and can't wait to nurture a love of creativity through the art camps!

Dance Coach

Coach Christina Fargalla
Christina is a dancing queen!  She has served as our Dance Coach and has done an amazing job leading our dancers to both learn dance routines but learn to work together as a team.  For Christina the spotlight is not something for the kids to grasp.  What is most important is supporting one another and realizing what the team can do together.

Flag Football Coach

Coach Patrick Turner
Growing up in Woodstock, GA Patrick Turner played football, basketball, baseball and running track in high school. Coach Turner chose the University of South Carolina where he became a starting free safety and also played outside Linebacker.  He even play quarterback in the last 3 games of the 1989 season when the starting quarterback went down with an injury.  Needless to say, Coach Turner knows football, all aspects of the game.

Since then Coach Turner stayed active in youth football since his playing days. He coached various teams from California to Georgia to South Carolina. He currently is the Offensive Coordinator for the SC Spartans JV team. The Spartans football program is a Christian organization offering middle school and high school age athletes an opportunity to play on an organized team even if they are home schooled or attend small private schools that do not offer a football option.

Science & STEM Coach

Coach Rusty Fleming

I was born in Raleigh, NC and grew up in NC, VA, and SC about evenly. My Dad was a pastor and we moved several times. I have always loved the church and doing things to bring me and others closer to the Lord. I have been involved in music and in teaching for most of my life. I believe God has gifted and called me to be able to impart knowledge to others and to do so in a way that is interesting and entertaining. All in all I have worked for a church for about 15 years and taught in schools for about 12. I have taught Science, Math, History, and Technology to grades 4 – 12 at various public and private schools in NC and SC. I am married with 5 grown children (plus all the children I have the joy of teaching every year). I am excited to be part of ROAR at WCCS this Summer and can’t wait to do fun and interesting things with everyone!
